Creating a Growth Mindset

There are two types of mindset, growth and fixed. Someone with a fixed mindset believes talents, skills, and intelligence are natural and do not require work. They avoid challenges, become discouraged when they make a mistake, take it personally when they receive useful feedback or criticism, or think the effort is a waste of time. They’ll say things like, “It’s too much work”, “I’ll never be good enough to ____.”

When you have a growth mindset, you believe new skills can be developed. You are open to learning new things and set yourself up for continued growth and opportunity. Having the ability to learn from your experiences helps you see the possibilities of everything that's possible. With a growth mindset, you’re more likely to achieve your goals and fulfill your dreams.

We’ve put together some ways to help you create a growth mindset and reach your goals.

  1. Be Teachable. Being willing to learn new things opens opportunities for you, enhances your skills, will help you to become more successful. Embrace challenges, failures, and the lessons you gain from it. Get out of your comfort zone.

  2. Identify Your Beliefs. What has been holding you back? We all have beliefs that have limited us. Identify what they are and work on changing the mindset around that belief. Instead of saying, “I will never get the promotion”, you can say “I really want this promotion, I am going to focus hard on what I can do to earn it”.

  3. Ask Yourself Questions. Ask yourself, what did I learn today? What mistakes did I make today and how can I learn from them? How can I challenge myself today, look at your beliefs, what is holding you back and how can you change it?

  4. Have Patience. Growth takes time and something you have to work on day by day. Reflect on who you are and what you want in life.

  5. Create Your Space. Create a space where you can brainstorm ideas, reflect on your day, what went great today, what can you improve on, work on projects, or just relax and dream big. Pick a space that is inviting and comfortable, choose a style or theme that is positive and will inspire you. Include your favorite uplifting music or podcast. Get a basket or bookshelf to keep journals handy to write in, throw in your favorite books.
