Are you looking for ways to stay sane while in isolation with family? How to secure quality food safely and learn from this unique time?
Like many of you, we are starting self-quarantine. This is how we decided to play our part to enable our hospital’s systems not to be overwhelmed. We also want to keep sharing about the way we learn to do that.
Managing the family at Home
You probably have hear other parents saying “It gets a little crazy in our house". Survive in self-isolation, and each other is new for many if not all of us. As we traveled just the 4 of us we have learned the hard way that level of proximity required adjustment! For this special instance, during which we add isolating ourselves physically from others, we had a 3 step process to prepare to survive in self-isolation, and each other STEP 1. Sitting together and explaining why we are doing it, and set up a contract of what we commit as a family. STEP 2. Then we defined a structure, everyone defining what our day will be like. In that schedule we have time to get things done, keep moving and give each other space, set time to connect with others digitally.
STEP 3. We know we will iterate as we learn! Adjust and tune up.
Homeschooling - the big H.
On this area, we were lucky to use some of the experience we already have. We just started again our home schooling that we had run during the beginning of this year. You will be able to make it work!
You will be surprised how much faster your kids learn when they have personalized experiences and keep the agenda LIGHT! It will Leaving more time for free time, imaginative and creative. So it is ok to let go and let them be more free have access to creative activities they can build on their own. You do not need 6 hours of homeschooling per day. Take more time to do activities with your kids, spend time on what they like and learn from it. Not only will this create a much calmer environment at home but also will enable to keep homeschooling on the long run.
There are a lot of resources out there. Whether your schools have provided you resources for continuing education at home, there are a lot of tools available online. Aubrey Hargis is a great specialist, and she offers amazing resources on her site.
It is a unique time to learn life skills by capillarity, we do not know get at school. Kids learn a ton by being with you, seeing what you do. It is an opportunity to enable them to understand how to thrive in a changing word, how to clam down, how to use creative energy in a new context. If you are taking actions for your community find a way to engage them in developing it. In addition, if you have any skills in eco-literacy, and getting to know how to live more independently closer to nature and the source of what is essential for us to live.
Ensure continued access to quality food and product necessary to keep you healthy
Whether you are lucky or not to be living in a farming area with lots of organic options there are ways to secure access to quality produce and food.
Access to local farmers and producers - time to get organised and combine our efforts
Today I will be focusing extending a local initiative of home delivery from local producers to our local community to more products. What we are adjusting is:
Digitalising the ordering process Creating an online ordering form, making it easy for each family to share what they need and an interface with producers. Our form is designed to limit errors and save automatically, and calculate dues.
Organize delivery and pick up limiting human interactions. As of now we are still getting organised but we are considering few options: - Central delivery place with timeslot for each producers so that they do not meet each others, cleaning of crates on - Central pick up area, with timeslots for people to pick up. - Home delivery leaving crates in front of homes.
Search if some one is doing the same, join, contribute or just take part of it. Want access to the resources we are developing, want to share your resources, comment below or reach us in the chat, combining efforts is the way to go!
You do not have access to a close farming ecosystem, growing your own food is an options available to all. Today, you do not need lots of land, soil, sun or water to grow quality food. I have been following a vertical aeroponic garden systems that allow you to grow your own produce without the learning curve or time commitment of traditional gardening. I have experienced of friends and local schools have been growing a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers with the Tower Garden. Kobe Bryant and his family foundation installed several Tower Gardens in a hotel that Kobe helped to renovate to house the homeless. Read more about it here.
It is an incredible TIME TO LEARN and CREATE NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR ALL OF US!
"And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.
And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.
And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed."
Be safe, healthy and joyful!
